This class has taught me a lot and when I say a lot it means that it touches every aspect of life and things that I never imagined to learn in a writing class. I was never a writer but a lot of times dark moments would push me to write a bit of my feelings and thoughts on a piece of paper. But structured writing was never my thing because I feel like I am not free to express myself, I am afraid to say too much, scared to take a side without hurting people that may read my words in the future and much more. In this class I had to think out of the box and be more creative to complete all my tasks. The discussion posts required a lot of deep thinking as the authors would use totally different words or objects to get their point across, they challenged my critical thinking ability. The journal was more of a secret space to be able to expose your feelings without them being exposed to the public.
Our first project had me reading a lot because I chose to write about “yon ti koze ak sem ” a Haitian book and I felt so deep into it and it made me relived certain events because it comes from someone who grew up in Haiti just like me. We both have been through similar social norms and values that weren’t fair for young girls like us. I couldn’t find the right words to start my essay. That project meant a lot to me. It also challenged my critical thinking skill along with my critical analysis skill. Our second project was a bit more difficult because I am still trying to find more efficient photos or meaningful art to represent my ideas and create good visual art slideshows. It is about insecurity in the subway as it is the number one form of transportation in NYC due to the lack of parking and the city being too crowded. A lot of crimes are being committed in the subway stations because of the lack of signal underground and the train cars not being equipped with cameras. I still had to find a good handful of information by reading a lot and find credible sources. Our third project, the research paper, it went by a bit fast and felt a bit easier because I am a bit used to these types of essays and also I got to choose a topic that affects a good quantity of people living in the US, because it is a country of immigrants despite certain cities being less diversified than others.
This is my second writing class at Baruch, and it really shocked me that I got to learn so much and interact that much with people from different backgrounds with totally different views and perspectives on daily life issues. My first writing class was not so interesting and did not excite me to learn, which pushed me away more from writing because I am not into writing. The semester went by really fast, and I loved every single class I have attended because the discussions we had were so meaningful and full of different information to learn from. A lot of the classmates that had shared their insights somehow changed my view on certain topics and helped me understand better. I still have a lot to learn because I don’t consider myself as a writer and still feel insecure about my writing, but I can proudly say that this class helped me for the better and made me think of giving writing a chance.
